problem with CSS (layers?)

Hi folks,
Could some kind soul please look at http://www.iteu.gla.ac.uk/elit/newindex.html in IE5.5/win and 
explain to me why the second box in the middle column seems to be sitting on *top* of its 
contents?  I'm trying to combine techniques from BlueRobot.com and AListApart.com using the 3-
column layout from BlueRobot and the tabular layout from AListApart, but one seems to be 
interfering with the other.  I reckon that it's something to do with fact that z-indexes are used, but 
I'm not sure what.

The site looks fine in Mozilla 1.1b+ and Opera 6.0.  I haven't got access to IE6 or a Mac.
