In these examples the dots are "shortcuts" that represent various 
locations:
../ represents the parent directory, so in the first example, it is saying: 
look for name.gif in a directory called image in the directory above this 
one.
./ represents the current directory, so the second example is saying: look 
for name.gif in the directory called image which is in this directory.
