Try your library. Check out every book that looks remotely interesting. 
Then, after you've had a chance to review them, go buy the most current 
edition.

I have tons of marvelous, $30-50 doorstops that are now out-of-date or did 
not really address the topics in a way I could understand.

And, since you're at a university, you should have access to a lot of 
current editions. Also look in the student bookstore sometime during the 
last half of December when students sell back their text books -- just a 
thought, but you might find a bargain there too.

As far as actual titles and authors -- that's a tough one, I like the 
O'Reilly series, but two years ago those books would have been Greek to me!
