A doctype is a set of rules that is /supposed/ to tell the browser how to
render the page.
Unfortunately, the browsers aren't necessarily doing their part and
honoring the DTD (document type definition, aka doctype) /until/ NN6. That
version is /supposed/ to strictly interpret the DTD and render accordingly,
but for some weird reason, it will not honor the 4.01 Trans which is
messing up mouseovers and tables.
And, IE tends to *fix* things for you -- ahh, it's such a helpful tool.
But, using the doctype is a bit of insurance. And, you will find many, many
of us *standard* bearers on these lists.
Does that help a little? You can find out more about them at
http://www.w3c.org/, but I /still/ have a little trouble reading them,
they're a little too technical for this liberal arts type.
