There is not a 400-font limit for Windows. There is a limit, imposed by a
64K buffer used for font information such as the names of the fonts. The
limit will depend on the font names (shorter names allow more fonts), and
on where the fonts are stored (fonts in the default folder allow more
fonts). Microsoft says that the limit is typically about 1000, but of
course your mileage will vary. I have 650 fonts or so, with no problems.
One important point is that Windows becomes unstable as the limit is
approached.
