This same thing happened to me.  But I was using a graphics tablet.  I
noticed that it only happened when I moved the pen to the outer edges
("outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!") of
the tablet.  The cursor changes to a gray, 3D cube, and cycles through
numbers (depending on where you have the pen on the tablet fringe).
Obviously some menus setting for the tablet, I thought.  But I couldn't get
rid of it without restarting the computer (tried going into the settings of
the tablet driver, but that didn't work).  Is it possible you have tablet
software loaded?

This is actually a "little bit" ON topic. My PC at work (the one I do
all my web programming and designing on) is acting strange. The
cursor/pointer has turned into the number "17" and is flashing. I've
never seen this before. The techs came out and scanned it for viruses
and found nothing. Their only solution is to wipe my drive and reload
everything.

I hate those types of solutions. If they don't know what's going on,
their answer is to wipe everything. Please, if you've run across this
before, let me know.

I am using Windows 98, with 128MB RAM.
