The only way I could figure to do this in CSS is with absolute positioning,
which won't give the flexibility or "liquid" table I'm looking for. There
may be another way that I just am not thinking of.

That's probably what I'm going to have to do. I'm doing another site in
which I'm shooting for strict 4.01 and so far with pretty good luck, but
even that I'm doing primarily so I could say I did! This one may just have
too many layout requirements for that.
