I might be way off base here but something occurs to me...

Some of the wingding fonts don't have a "character" for every letter of the 
alphabet and some only recognize upper or lower case etc.

If you hit a key that doesn't have a corresponding "character" you get a 
plain ole rectangle.

Is it possible that for some weird reason this applies in some 
circumstances to a regular font ? Yes, I know it sounds crazy, and I don't 
know enough about CSS to know whether there's something in the code that 
could cause an ordinary font letter to present as a winding because the 
particular "character" doesn't exist or can't present as it's been asked 
for ? ...if that makes sense.

Maybe I'll just crawl back into my hole in the wall LOL ..
