HTML is a mark-up language written as an application of SGML

SGML is a set of rules for developing markup languages. It is complex.

XML is also a set of rules for developing markup languages. It is a
restricted subset of rules from SGML, which makes it much simpler to learn
and use.

XHTML is a markup language written as an application of XML. It's
equivalent to HTML but rewritten to comply to the restricted rule-set.
