I think you have to consider the likely flow of information the user will
experience or seek to experience.  If the user is going to click on a link
and then only view a few pages on the new site then opening a new browser
window may be inconvenient.

BUT - if the uses is likely to explore the new site at length.. then opening
a new browser window is convenient because when you are done you can just
close the browser window and you will be back to your original site and
browser window.  This will save having to hit the back button 25 times or
whatever.

Just my 2 cents.
