Yes! Examples - Signage at Roissy Airport, Paris, was designed by 
Adrian Frutiger, developed into the Frutiger font. Scala Regular and 
Sans were designed by Martin Majoor for the opera house in Milan; now 
the Sans is one of the most popular faces for corporate literature 
(and IMHO one of the very best, most readable sans serifs ever 
produced).
