Hi All
I'm doing in-depth research on each major search engine trying to
determine how to get my web sites listed on them--it is getting
harder and harder ever since they allllll started selling that
service (i'm aware of how to use Keywords in meta tags and also in
body text, getting other sites to link to your page, etc. to get the
page ranked high).
I found out that Northern Light classes sites according to their
extension. i.e., .com and .net is always commercial; .org is a non
profit registered org and a tilde (~) before a name is designated as
a personal web site.
Yahoo! also distinguishes between commercial and
non-commercial sites. Commercial sites belong in the Business and
Economy section. If it's not listed there they may throw out the
request.
Does anyone know if this categorization of business/org/personal is
common practice with all search engines?
It appears this will make a big difference in what extension you
choose for a domain name because the wrong choice could affect how
your site is listed in search engines, or not at all.
For instance, I am about to purchase a domain name for my web
business which will end in .com but that will not be suitable for my
other page(s) which are focused on poetry or a ministry (not
non-profit orgs) so I assume I should stick with the personal page
identifier of a ~tilde. Am I understanding this correctly?
OR---after I have my own domain name, can I use a ~tilde on a .com
site, at my own discression, to indicate a personal page so the
search engines will correctly register a personal page on a .com
site? For instance:
http://www.loriwebs.com/~poetry/
Any suggestions?
thanks,
Lori
