I asked a very similar question on the Techniques list in March - you should
be able to find the messages in the archives, searching for "new browser
windows".

My conclusion was that it's OK to open new browser windows, but good
practice to inform users that that's what you are doing. One of the nicest
ways I've seen to do that is at http://www.primhe.org/resources/links.htm

Hello everyone

I've just finished a predominantly frames site and have received feedback
from someone connected with it who said that it is no longer considered
good practice to force external links to open in a new window.  I have read
that it is a good idea because that way you don't lose visitors who might
not have seen the whole of the site but got seduced by an interesting or
relevant link to another site.

I could open the links in a frame but this looks a bit strange to me.

What do people think?
