IMHO, it is an aesthetic decision to keep things uncluttered. I use
mouseovers to bring attention to them in addition to a contrasting color. I
don't think it takes a newbie very long to figure out that links are a part
of just about every site out there. I'm not a professional designer, just a
SAHM doing this as a hobby that I thoroughly enjoy, so take my opinion as
such!
