JavaScript cannot read/write to any file on the client's computer, with =
the exception being cookies. Cookies themselves are ASCII Text files, and =
as such, can do no harm to the users system configuration files (or any =
other file, for that matter).
I can't speak on Java, Java2, etc., as I have no experience programming in =
these languages.

Hi All,
<de-lurking> Enjoying the discussion of java / javascript as one =
with very=20
limited knowledge of its full capabilities. Also, as one to err on the =
side of=20
caution, I normally have it turned off. And today I just captured this =
snippet from=20
a security checklist at=20

<quote>
Turn off Java and JavaScript everywhere. If you run them in your email =
client you=20
should have your head examined. Even on the web this can be dangerous: It =
is=20
childishly simple for a malicious website to write to your AUTOEXEC.BAT, =
force=20
you to reboot by crashing your machine, and on reboot automatically wipe =
your=20
entire hard drive clean.
