sound files - mac

Hi!
This is my first post (so go easy on me!)
I'm creating a website for this golf company and they want a small music
clip to run in the background of the main page. I've already figured out
that using <bgsound> and <embed> are going to be the easiest ways to do
this (i guess).

Now, here's my problem. I need someone to recommend a good sound editing
utility for the Mac, like Windows's Sound Recorder. I can't believe this
has been so hard to find. I have, so far, been able to record the music
(this is off a CD) and convert it to the recommended file formats, but
short of hitting "record" and "stop" and the best times, i'm having a hard
time making the sound clips the exact length i want them to be. aaarrrgh! i
just want something (preferably free) that i can use to do basic editing,
like Windows's Sound Recorder can do.

This is my first commercial website, and I'm basically learning as I go.
FYI, I'm using Dreamweaver 2.0 (for a mac, obviously).
