Helluva way to run a business, dontcha think? I remember saying back in
1998 that I was going to bootstrap my company, and that I wasn't going to
invest in anything, whether money or time, that did not have a reasoned plan
to return a tangible profit. People told me that "isn't the way it's done"
and that I would never make it big that way.

Guess they were right on both counts. Apparently, the only thing common
sense buys is longevity...:).

Those ideas reminded me of a 'dotcom crash of '00' documentary on History
Channel not long ago. -Both- of those aspects were major contributors.

Well, the root of it all really was the investors but that's a different
side of the coin.

Overhead. There were interviews with several 'geeks with a new $M budget
to play with.' The -first- thing they always did was have a party. Big,
major, mondo blockbuster parties. And more. And lots more. They spent
money like there wasn't going to be any end to it, without ever bringing
in more than a few dimes. If they had spent it on development and not just
funfunfun they'd have lasted a -lot- longer and maybe had a better chance.

The vision thing, all the geeks knew was they had was mega$, and tbytes
worth of servers, and gbits worth of bandwidth, and some of the brightest
brains on the planet, but only the *vaguest* idea of what to do with it
all!! So they fudged and messed around with little direction or goal and
never really *DID* anything. Well, they had tech goals, but if marketing
and sales and all that other vague 'soft' science isn't mixed in the geeks
don't have any -solid- plans and don't have a chance.

Billions down the drain for nothing.

60 Mins did a segment today on how the wall street (lower case) villains
kept feeding lines about 'great potential' and 'hold course' and *LIED* to
everyone. All they did was make the final situation worse because no one
had a clue it was coming. I did and probably others too but that's a
different topic. :)
