Jeremy,

You may have already had this answered for you, considering when you
originally sent your request. However, since I have only one reply to your
question in my archive here, I'll put my 2c in...

On any server system, *NIX, NT, and I believe Mac as well, the process of
getting a custom 404 page is generally pretty simple: write a static HTML
page indicating the error, optionally who to contact regarding the error,
and a link to the proper location. You don't want to use server-side
scripting in most cases, as it could cause problems if the server technology
is the culpret for the missing page (such as when a site uses ColdFusion,
PHP, ASP, or even CGI to build a site "on the fly" as visitors progress
through it). Once your page is built, upload it to your server, using a
naming convention matching their requirements -- some hosts require the
pages to be called 404.htm, others allow custom names.

The tricky part is getting it to work. Some hosts may have a control panel
for you to set your custom error page with, others show you how to adjust
files (such as .htaccess) for it to work, and still others require you to
contact tech support to have the custom error page "activated" for your
domain. The exact process depends upon the type of server and what the
hosting company does or does not allow for your hosting package.

In my case, which seems to be typical of most NT-based hosts, I build the
page then contact tech support to let them know where my page is. They make
their adjustments, and the page is then activated. It may be simpler or more
involved depending on who you host with and the system involved.

Good luck!

Kehvan
