I use hourly log forms that I have made myself (mine are on paper but could
be done on the computer as well) with the categories: Date, Start Time, End
Time, Time Worked, and Description and I log all of my work hours for
EVERYTHING.  Yes it is extra paperwork and sometimes tedious but it has
helped me organize my time immensely.

I have an hourly log sheet on which I record all work that I do every day
and when I begin every new project I staple an hourly log sheet to the
client's folder and also record all of my time for that particular project.
If a client questions my hours I show them my logs.  No one can argue with
such detail.  I figure hours by 10 minute increments and charge accordingly.

Another benefit of this system is that when I finish a project I can very
easily calculate exactly how much time I have spent on it down to exact ten
minutes.  This has greatly helped me see how accurate my price estimates are
and learn how to more accurately estimate new projects.

I have been using this system for about a year now and I cannot rave about
it enough.  My one person business has grown so much this past year that I
have begun setting up shop and interviewing to hire a few part time people
and I will have them use this system as well (they will hate me!).
