Nigel, sadly, probably hit it on the head. My first response was "Why are
you wasting your time?"

After years of doing this with a wide range clients (both industry and
financial worth) it's become clear that no one gives any attention to
consultations they don't pay for. If it's unsolicited, they see it either
as an attack or a sales pitch, and they appreciate neither. Kevin's comment
about email=spam is a more blunt way of saying that.

There is a chasm of difference between motives in a web site. Some want to
be the ultimate, some are just happy with "we're on the web!". Likewise, it
seems that those who want the ultimate have no appreciation for how much it
truly costs to get there.

These days, everyone out there is a self-proclaimed "web master" or "web
site designer". Chances are that your barber's brother-in-law's baby
sitter's boyfriend "builds web sites!" and they're all offering free advice,
too, much of which ends in "I can build/fix it for you!"

As Kevin said, until you get some one-on-one face time with potential
clients, you're just another somebody out there who wants to get their
money.

Get on the phone and make an appointment to "followup on the email they
received" to see if they "have any questions or comments" about it. Chances
are they won't remember what in the world you're talking about, but make it
sound important and beneficial. Make sure you're after the person who makes
the decisions, otherwise, you continue to waste your time.

Good luck.
