Does anyone have some light to shed on this subject?
SSL 'space' is just like normal web space, only in a 'protected' directory structure with higher security (supposedly), and visibility by the httpsd daemon. There is nothing special here, .. but you have two choices:
1) Use your Host's Cert, which means your SSL server will have their name.
2) Purchase one or more Certs (from Verisign, et al) so you may have your 'own' servers.
That could be the $300 charge you mentioned, .. but beware that charge is for *each* cert. We are members of the Thawte HP program, .. which is much lower cost, but Thawte was recently purchased by Verisign.
Separate issues are a Merchant Account and Transaction Processing.
