I have a client who phoned me in a panic this morning - immediately followed by a fax that he had received overnight, from someone calling themselves "Electronic Domain Name Monitoring" from Atlanta, Georgia. The upshot of this fax was that my clients domain name (e.g. www.client.com) was about to be compromised by someone else attempting to register www.client.net!
This company in Atlanta promised my client that it was OK, because they suspected the motives of the people wanting to register the new name, and if my client signed this form and faxed it back within 48 hours, they would register the name to him instead, for the low fee of $70.00 US! Now I realize it is a good idea to protect the clients brand, if it is worth something to them, and register these variations too - but I can do that in a dozen other places for $15.00 US, with competition finally having some good results in the registrar business.
What bothers me is that this fax looks like something a lawyer would put together: like a beaurocracy just trying to do its due diligence, hence fooling my client into not suspecting they are just trying to scare him out of seventy bucks!
So, knowing the distribution of this list, I am wondering how many others have been hit with this scam, and if anybody has had any dealings with these shysters?
Cheers
