I've been transferring domain names using
http://www.000domains.com
To set up an account there you need to choose a "user name" and a
"password" -- and DON'T loose those!!! Can be your personal name, a
business name, whatever. After that, you can transfer any domain name to
000domains.
When you transfer a domain name via them, you do have to pay for an
additional year's registration. Say there is 6 months left before renewal,
when you transfer via 000domains, you will then have 18 months until the
next renewal date.
Good news is, it only costs $13.50 per year for the domain name.
Bad news is, whoever is listed as the email address for Administrative
Contact for the domain name MUST approve the transfer. They will receive an
email asking them to "confirm" the transfer by going to a special website
page (URL link is in the email) and putting in a special code that is in
that email as well. That way, no one but the AdminContact can confirm the
request to transfer, and they know the AdminContact received the email
because of the link and special code that was in it.
Also, the domain name must be current (not expired) and must not be in
dispute of any type.
After that, any changes you make are done at the on-line control panel.
They have FAQ and help files on line, and they have been pretty responsive
to email inquiries, too.
Hope that helps, BTW, I'm not affiliated in any way, just use their service!
