I agree with everything John and others have said, I would merely correct
one of John's requirements, which leads into my own main requirement:
If they have SSH, (secure "telnet"), I'm happy. A host that supports SSH
and does not support Telnet, or at least has reservations about Telnet,
IMHO has the other important requirement for hosting:
"Extreme Savvy" regarding all technical hosting issues, networking
infrastructure, security issues, hardware issues - to the point of
dangerous obsession.
The importance of this cannot be overstated. When you set up a client with
a host, you don't want to be bothered for the next couple of years with
niggly down times, small failures, little network weaknesses: taking calls
from clients on these issues uses up whatever profit margin there might
have been in the hosting package in the first place, and undermine's our
credibility. The only way to avoid these things happening is if the Sys.
Admin.'s know their stuff VERY well, and do it right the first time. The
other sign that they are doing this right is if the owner, or senior person
in the firm, is a techie, as opposed to an accountant or an MBA: then you
know the technical issues will be looked at first, every time.
Without this "minor" detail, the value of using an outside host is
completely lost: I can easily set up a web server that is slow,
unresponsive, crashes, and is not always online, especially on weekends and
evenings when my senior programmers are out partying :). Why would I pay
someone else to do that for me?
Cheers
