I suppose it is "what the market will bear."
I ran across one domain name that was being offered for $10,000 -- nothing 
under that considered!   My guess is that it is still available.  It was a 
great domain, but someone have to make a lot of money from it to recoup 
that investment!

In countries where "dickering" is a way of life, the rule of thumb was 
usually to ask about twice what you would really be willing to accept, and 
then work from there.  Or, you can just set a firm price, what you think it 
is worth to you and a potential buyer, and hold your ground.  I think we 
are still in uncharted territory on this one.
