The HWG has a bunch-o-resources:
Business FAQ: <http://www.hwg.org/lists/hwg-business/faq.html>

Well, if you check the archives you will find a gazillion posts on this
topic as it comes up weekly as folks join the List in search of free
contracts. <http://archives.hwg.org/hwg-business/>
Our two resident attorneys on this list should be checking in soon. ;-)

Well, no one on this list would take advantage of freelancers. ;-) That
being said, if you are taken advantage of - that is because you let it
happen. Do your do diligence!

Talk to an attorney. Each persons focus and how they want to run their
business is unique unto them and you want to be protected. You also need
to talk to an accountant to make sure that your tax status is properly
setup to your advantage as well.
Part of being a "freelancer" is that you are your own business and if you
want to be successful, you need to act, be perceived and run it like one or
all your efforts will be for naught.
When it comes to legal and/or accounting issues - leave that to the pros.
