If we're being picky, it's a "search engine" that's an index (a
searchable one), Yahoo is a directory (and a searchable one at that).
So I suppose as they're all searchable, and they must have an engine to
do it, that makes both Yahoo, Google, Altavitsa, and whichever other one
you care to mention, "search engines".
Oh, and Google also has a directory (it actually runs the Yahoo one too
but that's another story), and they're both searchable (the index and
the directory)
Why do people have to get so hung up on what we call things, we all
know what we're talking about.
What term would you have prefered to be used as an all inclusive term
for Yahoo, Google, Altavista, ODP etc.
I think "search engines" was a pretty good choice.

Yaho has never been a "searxh engine." It is an Index.
