The red background looked rather bright on its own before the rest loaded, but it is a great match for the mangoes(?) you use at the foot. One small gripe is that I didn't like scrolling down to the bottom to get to the business end of the navbar! Possibly I would feel differently if I was there for interest rather than for critique! It's my personal option, but I think there's more than just me out there with a trained reflex to look for the navigation at the top of the page. As you say in your email, it's not finished yet, but you have an excellent start, I would say!
