I have been lurking in the background on a number of the Guilds list for the
past couple of weeks. Watching the hints and tip flow from one member to
another, during which time a have learnt a lot about the ART of designing
and
coding web pages.
Whilst I have no great desire to become some great HTML guru, I joined the
guild to get help and guidance so that who ever views my humble web page
(with what ever browser, screen res etc) they could at least view it
correctly because of correct coding techniques.
It has been both mine and my partner's understanding that the meaning of
critique is to:
provide an assessment of a piece of work from a third party position, no use
of words such and "I", "my", "me" etc, and without prejudice. Like the
criticism (critique) of any creative endeavour, the critic should remain
balanced in view providing assessment of both a work's strengths and
weaknesses while remaining ever careful to present the critique in the voice
of the third person. A good critic, regardless of how much or how little
merit the material under examination is demonstrated by the critique to
possess, will never offer forth personal opinion. This does not negate the
avenue for providing a passionate response, but the critic should at all
times endeavour to avoid the use of personal and emotive language, for such
an approach only serves to degrade any validity the critique may otherwise
hold.
We may be naive in thinking that such philosophy should apply to such a list
as this, but isn't that the purpose of this listing. ie To provide
constructive criticism on the web authors coding.
We would hope that a few members of this list take note of the terms of
being a member of the guild by reviewing the guild's netiquette.
We sincerely hope that when the time comes for our web sites to be
"critiqued ' by members of this list, the comments will reference the source
code and not our or any of our clients personnel choice on colour schemes,
animated gif and such.
Good Luck and We hope that One and All have a Happy New Year.
