Hi Phil

I took a look at your site, mostly because this subject interests me and I
will be travelling to Britain soon.
Here are some comments.

1. Your backgrounds are inconsistent throughout the site. To have them the
same gives a sense of a group of similar and related pages.

The black background can be a bit heavy, and the textured backgrounds
sometimes are distracting or make the text hard to read.

A very obvious background you could use is one depicting stone. Make sure it
is very light so the text is readable.

2. On the first page, there is a line of small grey text under the
logo/title graphic. This grey text is unreadable against that background.

3. I think you need more in the way of navigation aids. For instance a side
bar that never changes throughout the site. Getting back to the background,
you could have the stone background for this sidebar/navigation bar, and
plain colour background for the main text.

4. You need only put the hwg logo on one page, either the first page, or
better, on an about me/contact page.

5. Though the overall design of the site and each page was a little basic,
the content was excellent. There was plenty to read and enough pictures. It
is not often one comes across a site that isn't comercial, isn't about
computers and has a large amount of useful, original content. The certainly
was one of these sites. I have bookmarked it and will sometime read it
completely.

6. I noticed some images don't have the ALT attributes set. This is a good
idea for browsers that either cannot support them (eg. lynx), have automatic
loading turned off and for those with slow connections it is nice to see a
description while it loads. I also suggest putting the size of the graphic
in the ALT attribute, eg

<IMG ALT="[Stonehenge from the west - 8Kb]">

and brackets around the ALT text for lynx (and possibly others) that see the
ALT text as part of the main text.

7. There was no doctype in the html files. This tells the browser,
validators and other user agents the standard to which the site has been
created. You can get a doctype at the w3 website [1].

Well, my connection has been lost, so I'll leave it there.

Overall a very content rich site that needs a little re-designing.
