need browser feedback

I am working on a page for a client. He has chosen a brick background with red
being the dominant color. I found it a little hard to work with, as far as
reading the text on the page without your eyes bugging out. I placed a greyed
out background in the tables, but I know that not all browsers will display
this. I've seen the site in NC4, MSIE3, NN2, AOL3, MSIE4. 
If any of you would be so kind as to take a run through and give me a little
feedback as to what you might do. I hate to make everything read as bold, but
I may have to. 
The site is only about 3/4 done,  also does not run through validator well as
a trip through MSFrntPg changes the doctype. That will be corrected upon
completion
