Re: Headroom, critique please

Hi everyone.

I am new to this list, and I am reading the critiques that come across ths
list closely, so that when I am ready to post my site, I'll have fixed all
the things you all find annoying before I annoy you with them. I am still
learning many things about web design, so I am not comfortable throwing in
my constructive criticism. But this site (my apologies to the site
designer, but) annoyed me so much, I had to post.

I am viewing with a Mac, Navigator, 33.6bps modem. I clicked on the link to
the site, and as soon as my browser started loading the site, I switched
back to my mail program to finish writing the email I was working on.
Suddenly, my typing froze and I couldn't get my system to respond. I
thought I was having software problems, but I found that my computer was
locked up while the black GIF background of this site drew in the
background. It took about 1:10 minutes to scroll down, covering the text
links at the bottom of the page.  While I was clicking like crazy, I had
clicked on the browser in the background, so as soon as my computer became
responsive again, it switched to Netscape, and I had to wait *again* while
the screen redrew from scratch, the background, then the logo images. This
process took approximately 3:30 minutes.

I didn't get any farther than the front page on this site. It seemed there
were some shorter moments of unresponsiveness while the images in the
middle drew. I just couldn't wait to get out of that loop, couldn't risk
going to another page and having to wait for the background to draw again.
Is there some point of using a black GIF as a background as opposed to a
BGCOLOR=#000000 tag? You lost me to frustration on the first page. I will
leave the rest of the critique to the experts.
