I don't have much experience with not for profit member organizations and
therefore am not sure what praxis they apply when selecting new board
members. I am quite familiar  with business corporations though and know 
of none which would even consider filling in a vacant seat on the Board of 
Directors by a popular vote.

p.s.
I am not suggesting the Guild should go back to appointing its GBers nor am
I suggesting it shouldn't
