The spec I've read about the attribute 'lowsrc' of the <img> tag says it only works with N2 or later. Not IE, neither Opera (don't know of the others). The source was "Webmaster in a Nutshell" by Stephen Spainhour & Valerie Quercia from O'Reilly Books (I suggest this book for everyone. It's ISBN: 1-56592-229-8) and http://www.willcam.com/res-html.html Nevertheless your Javascript suggestion it's the best bet on this situation, despite the fact that it only works with HTML4 compliant browsers.
