Another line of thought is to invert the gradient so that the black is at
the left(if your site design can stand it);-)

Make an initial gradient black to white, approx. 480 wide. Then increase the
canvas on the right with a white background to about 1300 wide(for 1280
resolution).

This would give those with 640 x 480 the optimum gradient.
Those with larger resolutions will still get the proper gradient, but with
varying widths of white.
