OK, you got me.  On occasion I let it go to 18 or 20, if I'm feeling really
generous.  To make it worse I also tend to bail out if I see more than 6 or
7 links on the home page, or if I have to scroll.  Yes, I am very busy and
don't have a lot of time I feel comfortable letting other people waste and
yes I bail out on a lot of Web sites.

And yes, I do make exceptions - *after* the home page.  Personal and family
Web sites with lots of photos are just fine (friends and family will usually
wait).  Art and photographic sites where quality images are essential are
OK.  Some kinds of software sites that focus on high quality images are
fine, some commercial sites where quality images are needed are fine, as
long as they don't do it to you on the home page and as long as you have
some warning what's coming.

I like Third Generation design (David Siegel) and metaphor.  I hate getting
blasted in the face by "bird shot" sites that have fifty links on the home
page.  I am also a raw beginner and will probably have to eat my words some
day but at least for now I am really trying to design pages that are
considerate of those who view them.

The sites I really enjoy are ones that are fast, attractive and still
effective.  It takes real skill to do that - something I have not seen a lot
of in my surfing adventures so far.  Take a look at http://www.joinhand.org/
if you want to see a class site (no I didn't do it, but I would love to say
I did).

Let me end by saying I think this is a great discussion group and I am
learning a lot lurking here.  I hope I have not offended anyone by speaking
out before I have put something up to shoot at.  Hopefully that will not be
too long.  So much to learn, so little time . . .

But now seriously, this does bring up a favourite of mine. I know we all say
that we don't wait longer than x seconds for a site to load, but do we
really do
it? How strict is everybody about this. I know I usually wait longer if it
starts to look interesting, but it has got to be a good front page before I
go
inside a site. Sort of like I'll give you one page to interest me as opposed
to
you've got 15 seconds to impress me with what a quick loading site you've
got.
