Absolutely should not be used on a commercial site. You have access to
logs, that's all you need. No major site, or well designed one has a place
for a counter. Save that for people's home pages and hobby stuff.

Subject: To count or not to count
Hi all,
I would like to pick the collective brains of the list about counters.
I have produced two commercial sites and included counters on both although
I didn't really need them because I had access to analog reports. I
included them because I thought it would indicate to other surfers just how
popular the sites were.
Today I was talking to the CEO of the company that I work for (not as a
web-designer) and we were discussing the company's internet site. I
challenged him over the lack of a counter on the company site and he
responded that a counter was totally unnecessary and something to be
avoided on commercial sites.
What I would like to know is the consensus opinion of the group. Perhaps to
save bandwidth all replies could come direct to me and in a few days I will
post a report on the group's views.
Thanks in advance
Stuart
