It certainly was for me. I was really struggling with the learning curve
and could find very little help in terms of books, etc. I did not mean to
imply Corel does not support third party documentation, only the they need
to actively *support* more of it, to try to fill the gap and give users more
reason to laud the software. That's one way to get more attention for the
products and to make sure those who try them have a good experience.
I think proprietary is the right work on their graphic file formats. Some
time back I went out and forked out a chunk of bucks for Gallery II, which
contains 15,000 clipart images, 500 fonts and 500 photos. With any other
clipart deal like that you can directly import the clipart into other
publications. Try that with their .cmx format files - no dice. You have to
load special software, with a rather obtuse interface, to get to the files
and use them. I tried getting both .cmx and .cdr files into Publisher98
with no luck, even though Publisher has a "Corel Draw" option. It could not
even recognize .cmx files and whenever I tried to load a .cdr file I got an
error message saying Publisher cannot convert the pictures. I have had the
same experience with other applications. Anyone who makes their files that
hard to use is not being user-friendly and for me that was another nail in
the coffin.
In Graphics Workshop Pro, which handles over 50 formats, you find the
following comments:
Graphic Workshop's use of CDR files is a bit peculiar. You'll save yourself
a degree of frustration if you read this section before working with CDR
files. Note that there are two distinct modes under which Graphic Workshop
can read CDR files.
Corel Draw's CDR files are vector graphics, but they contain small preview
or thumbnail images which appear in the Corel Draw File Open dialog and in
the Mosaic browser application. Graphic Workshop will read these preview
images – it will not read the actual line art graphics in CDR files. The
preview images are very coarse, but they're useful for quickly ascertaining
what's in a CDR file.
Alternately, Graphic Workshop can be instructed to search CDR files created
with Corel Draw 4 and 5 for bitmap objects. If one or more bitmaps are
found, Graphic Workshop will read these as if they were conventional bitmap
images. This is handy, for example, should you wish to extract a bitmap from
a CDR file with no loss of resolution. If no bitmaps are present, Graphic
Workshop will show you the CDR thumbnail preview for the file. If more than
one bitmap is present, a dialog will appear to prompt you to choose one of
the available images
Enable the Read CDR Bitmaps switch in Setup to have Graphic Workshop troll
CDR files for bitmaps, or disable it to have it display thumbnails for all
CDR files.
If Graphic Workshop only reads a thumbnail image from your CDR files, it
will allow you to convert from CDR, but you'll be converting the preview
images. This will not be attractive. Should you contact us and ask us why
converting from CDR thumbnail images results in a small, coarse graphic
that's nowhere near as good as it looks in Corel Draw, our leather winged
demon of the night will make a special trip over to visit you and rip out
your lungs.
The last sentence says it all.
IMHO Corel needs to work on their customer focus a lot more if they want to
steal market share from Photoshop. For my part I am not finding Photoshop
any more difficult to learn than I did PhotoPaint.

And you're right there are no good book for Photopaint and TONS of very good
books for Photoshop. And that is a very important and decisive point.
No matter which programm you use I wish you a good 'graphic experience'.

You mentioned something interesting about propietary file formats.
What problems did you have? I'd love to know.
Did I understand you right that Corel does not support third party
documentation?
(This is new to me, but I have NO experience in dealing with Corel
Corporation I just use the programs)
