Fireworks 3, pen tool, and creating a filled object - AAAGH!

Hi.

I'm at my wits end. I just cannot figure out how the heck I can create
an odd-shaped object, with a fill, using the pen tool in Fireworks 3.

The Fireworks PNG file is at
http://www.the-isg.co.uk/fill-problem.png.

The desired result is an object that is solid, rather than outlined.
As you can see, while the object has an external path to it, there are
no fill properties, and I cannot understand why (believe me, I've gone
through the literature and help files extensively).

If any of you can figure this out, and let me know how the hell to
perform this (probably very simple) problem, I'd be grateful!

By the way, I'm on the digest version of the list, so if you want to
reply off-list as well, please feel free! I will, of course, reply to
