Alpha channels are used to save masks and selections etc. in. They are only
accessible to the graphic in which they are saved though, so if you want to
work with multiple copies of the same image (such as when making rollover
buttons and the like) you should save them out to disk.
Then you can "get back" the selected area of that text which you already
placed on the layer and now want to drop shadow (for example).
