Re: making smaller files

Perhaps this question has been asked before, and if so, I'm sorry, but I
couldn't find anything on it.

I have a favorite stationery background that I scanned and made into a jpg.
The first version was monstrous, as it was a full 8.5 x 11.  Then I resized
the graphic a little smaller, but the file was still over 300k.  I want to
use this as a web background, but I can't size it too small, or the left
border won't look nice.  This border has 4 differently colored square
sections.  The next thing I did was crop it a little more than half in the
height, and made it 600 width.  This is as far as I can go without damaging
the left margin pattern.  But it's still over 100k and too slow to use as a
background.  Is there a way I can compress the size of the file without
actually resizing the graphic any smaller.  This is the kind of background
that I can't allow to tile.

I have Paintshop Pro 4, Photoshop 5, and Image Composer.  Thanks in advance
for any tips you can give me.
