Anti-Aliasing is a technique that uses color to create the illusion of
smooth edges on a display that uses square pixels.

In other words:
Anti-Aliasing is a technique for smoothing out the display of diagonal and
curved lines and edges on a low-resolution computer screen.

Usually Anti-Aliasing makes your art, especially type and line art, look
better. Sometimes it makes it look worse. Most drawing programs give you
control over anti-aliasing and you can disable it when it causes problems.

In plain english:
Anti aliasing reduces that "jaggy" look in images. (That "stairstep" pattern
in diagonal lines for example)
