png format

I am wondering about the diff formats that are workable on the web.  I found
that a graphic that I am working on looks great in bmp or png format but
looks awful in jpg or gif format.  I loaded the graphic up to the web in png
format and can view it just fine.  But am curious to know if this is an
acceptable format for all browsers to view.  Thanks.
