Virginia,
I used a technique in PhotoShop to redo your gif. Though you didn't
indicate that you had PS5, I figured I'd give you the tips and perhaps you
can apply it to PSP5
1. I opened your file in PS and used the magic wand to select the image
2. I opened a new Channel
3. Using the selection from your image - I did an invert (control-I) to get
a black and white copy of your image
4. I then selected the entire area and performed a Gaussian blur with a
setting of 4
5. Performing Image | Adjust | Levels, I brought the handles towards the
center - this reduces the blur, and defines clear curved lines.
6. Once that was done, I opened a new layer and performed Selection | Load
Selection and picked the channel I defined earlier
7. Then I just applied your red color to the selection and saved as a
transparent gif file
In addition to the gif you originally had, I also made up one with a nice
drop shadow - If you can use it, fine - If not - just trash it

Subject: Transparent graphic with smoother edges
I am trying to get a graphic to have edges that are not jagged yet is
transparent. I use Paint Shop Pro 5.01 and can't seem to make the graphic
at the following URL look smooth yet not look crappy when transparent.
