a question

what is the preferred language to use when trying to do things such as image
swapping (making it banner-like) and doing image specific type operations?
(e.g. imagemaps (I know <map>), onmouseover's, etc).. also once I saw a page
that had a menu to the left that opened when a user clicked on an item with
a + sign (much like windows explorer).. was this activeX or has anyone seen
something like this? It was a large site.. perhaps microsoft's old site and
I just don't remember? Any replies thanked
