Kate - Just read this note from Byron.  As an update to my previous note, I
think you may be making these images in the 16M color mode (condusive to jpg
format) and then saving them as a GIF image - this will induce noice into
your gif image like what Byron identified.   Since your image consists of
only the two basic colors anyway, make it with your color settings at 256
and not 16M - Then save as a Gif89A - That should fix it
