Illustrator

Hi, Just installed Illustrator.
Everything has very jagged edges,
this can't be correct, is there a preference or something
that needs to be set up?
Also when the program starts up it gets to the point where
it says "Loading startup settings" and just hangs there for like
40 seconds, can't find any info in the manuals about either of these
any help.....greatly appreciated.
