Ever since Wendy and Chris talked about their background, strengths and
weakness, I have been trying to think about what to say about myself.
Several years ago when I lived in CA I worked in the entertainment industry.
I have strong organizational skills so I worked as Executive Assistant for
Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman, at Marvel Entertainment. After that I
was Administrative Coordinator for Valencia Studios, until I retired on
disability in 1990.
My husband and I moved back to Texas so we could be closer to our grown
children and our grandchildren. Because I had gained computer skills with
my employment, sort of learning in the trenches.... I naturally had a home
computer and kept trying to increase my learning curve.
About 2 1/2 years ago I had the desire to make a home page with a Christian
theme. I got space for a free page from Geocities and put up a simple page
with their online Editor. After reading lots of online tutorials, I just
wanted to try all kinds of things... adding images and music, etc. I became
fascinated with all the things designed for the web. Every time I would
find a new page that impressed me... I would ask myself... "how did they do
that?" Naturally, I would study their source codes to find out. Then I'd
build more web pages from the new information. Soon my own site had grown
to 12 pages and I had built pages for all my kids and grandkids and many of
my friends.
When I got my new Gateway computer with scanner, color printer and lots more
hard drive space, I bought Photoshop 5 and bunches of greeting card programs
and went to work. I devoured more tutorials and created my own designs. I
was actually surprised that I had a talent for color and design, because I
never could draw or make anything artistic as a child. This was lots of fun
for me and before long I had made collections of backgrounds, buttons, etc.
When I found the HTML Writers Guild, I immediately joined. The lists have
really helped me grow in knowledge and technique.
Last year I started to build my web design business. I live near a small,
growing community where businesses are just starting to look into getting
their businesses online, so this is an opportunity for me to have a small
business that I can work at part time, in spite of my disabilities. My
strengths seem to be in creativity and working with colors to make new
backgrounds and designs, and my weaknesses is definitely in TABLES :) My
biggest frustration is that there seems to be no "standard" in HTML and the
fact that designers always have to design for old monitors and browsers, as
well as new.
Sorry this was so long... thanks to everyone on this design list... you are
always so helpful!
