Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions!  I will be practicing with
inverse backgrounds and learning to use masks... also the path tool.  I have
found some tutorials on these methods.

I understand about the RGB mode.  I know I could have saved myself a lot of
trouble if I would ALWAYS save my layers as a psd file.
