I don't know of any other way - this is what I found when searching for ways
to meet the goal...

I don't think so.  In FW, I select both the text and the mask and then use a
filter labelled "Group as Mask"

while applying the mask?

Not sure - except that I need it visible enough to select, of course! Again,
I'm not primarily a graphic artist, so forgive me if I misread any of this!
